Single Phase Step Voltage Regulator for USA Canada with CSA and UL approval

VR8 Series Single-Phase Step Voltage Regulator is a medium-voltage, tap-changing autotransformer. It automatically adjusts distribution line voltages by plus or minus 10% (in 32 small increments of 5/8% each) to counter fluctuations caused by load changes or long-distance line drops.

Because it operates at medium-voltage levels (ranging from 2,500V up to 34,500V, at 50/60 Hz), it is predominantly used in utility, infrastructure, and heavy industrial distribution networks rather than end-user homes.

The primary applications of the VR8 series device include:

1. Utility Distribution Network Substation & Overhead Lines

This is the most common application. As power travels long distances from power plants or substations to end consumers, voltage naturally drops along the line.

  • Long Distance Utility Feeders: Installed on overhead poles (overhead types) or pad-mounted on the ground along radial distribution lines to “boost” voltage back to nominal standards for consumers located at the end of the line.

  • Substation Grid Stability: Installed within utility substations to regulate the voltage of specific outgoing feeders or phases, compensating for sudden fluctuations caused by changing regional power demands.

2. Integration of Renewable Energy (Solar & Wind Farms)

Renewable energy sources like large-scale solar arrays and wind farms fluctuate heavily depending on weather conditions.

  • When solar/wind generation spikes, it can cause overvoltage at the injection point into the grid. Conversely, when the generation drops, under-voltage occurs. The VR8 series automatically steps the voltage up or down to ensure that green energy is fed into the grid safely without causing instability.

3. Industrial Infrastructure & Smart Grid Modernization

Industrial zones with heavy machinery cause intense inductive loads, leading to localized voltage dips and surges.

  • Smart Grid Compatibility: Featuring advanced programmable digital controls (supporting communication protocols like MODBUS and DNP3), the VR8 acts as a smart node on the grid. It allows utility companies to remotely monitor, log data, and dynamically adjust power quality in urban grids and modern automated substations.

4. Railway and Transportation Electrification

Electric rail transit systems introduce heavy, shifting, and unpredictable loads onto power lines as trains accelerate and pass through different line sections.

  • The VR8 series is implemented in energy-saving and grid-stabilization projects for electrified railways to prevent voltage dips that could otherwise disrupt transit networks or trigger protection systems.

5. Rural and Fringe Grid Upgrades

In rural or remote locations, upgrading entire transmission lines or building new substations to fix voltage drops is economically unfeasible.

  • The VR8 single-phase regulator offers a highly cost-effective alternative. It can be installed directly on a pole or small platform to maintain steady power to remote communities, agricultural operations, or small rural industrial sites.

Summary of Deployment Styles based on Ratings:

  • Overhead / Pole-Mounted Units: Smaller kVA configurations are built with support brackets and overhead lifting lugs specifically for direct installation on utility poles.

  • Substation / Pad-Mounted Units: Larger kVA configurations (ranging up to 1000 kVA) are constructed with flat substation bases and rectangular tie-down provisions for ground installation alongside heavy equipment.

VR-8 single-phase step voltage regulators are tap-changing autotransformers. They regulate distribution line voltages from 10% raise (boost) to 10% lower (buck) in thirty-two steps of approximately 5/8% each. Voltage ratings are available from 2400 volts (60 kV BIL) to 34,500 volts (200 kV BIL) for 60 Hz and 50 Hz systems. Internal potential winding taps and an external ratio correction transformer are provided on all ratings so that each regulator may be applied to more than one system voltage. Smaller kVA sizes are supplied with support lugs for pole mounting and with substation or platform tie down provisions. Larger sizes are provided with substation bases with pad-mounting provisions.
